ADULT PSYCHOTHERAPY

INDIVIDUAL THERAPY

As a clinical psychologist, I work with most disorders and difficulties. However, my areas of interest include adult survivors of childhood abuse, including sexual abuse; trauma and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) as well as relationship and interpersonal difficulties.

Possible reasons for individual psychotherapy:

  • interpersonal difficulties
  • daily stress & work difficulties
  • mood disorders (incl. depression, bipolar disorder)
  • anxiety disorders (incl. panic attacks, phobias, obsessive-compulsive behaviour, post traumatic stress and general anxiety)
  • psychotic disorders (incl. schizophrenia)
  • sexual or gender difficulties
  • eating disorders
  • adjustment difficulties
  • personality disorders
  • personal growth and awareness

COUPLES (MARITAL) THERAPY

When two people in a relationship experience difficulties they often become stuck and are unable to move past their differences. This is when the help of an objective, trained psychologist could be called upon to help clarify what is happening in the relationship and how the problem that is currently putting a strain on the relationship can be overcome in order for the couple to grow together.

When treating a couple, the relationship becomes my client and not one or the other partner. Often when issues underlying the problem surface, one or both partners might feel the need to pursue individual therapy in addition to the couples therapy. However, in couples therapy, we work predominantly with the relationship with a view to improve it.

Possible reasons for couples (marital) therapy include:

Although almost any situation can move people to seek help, the following are general reasons:

  • finances
  • children
  • fidelity
  • communication
  • compatibility

CHILD PSYCHOTHERAPY

Psychotherapy with children naturally includes parental involvement. Parental consent and information regarding the child’s background and history are vital in the treatment of children. Feedback to parents with regards to the child’s progress will be given on a regular basis throughout treatment.

Play therapy

The therapy room, equipped with carefully chosen toys is a space where the child can feel safe and supported. It is a space in which the child is encouraged to express their thoughts and emotions in an environment which is familiar to them.

Parental guidance

Often parents feel at their wits' end when dealing with a child whose behaviour is problematic due to a specific reason. After careful assessment, a treatment plan will be decided on, which will include support and guidance for the parents with regards to dealing with their child’s behaviour.

Adolescent therapy

Being an adolescent means going through a lot of changes. Sometimes these changes coupled with specific life events are difficult to navigate. The challenges life poses at this stage can sometimes feel quite overwhelming. Whether the adolescent needs help to deal with issues of the self (self worth, self confidence, self image) or with relational issues, therapy is the ideal confidential space in which to share their thoughts and feelings with a view to feeling more confident and comfortable with the difficult situations they might be facing.

Possible reasons for child therapy include:

  • divorce
  • bullying
  • trauma
  • bedwetting
  • separation and anxiety disorders
  • mood disorders (incl. depression)
  • self harming behaviour
  • developmental disorders (incl. autism)
  • attention deficit disorders (incl. attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder or ADHD)
  • disruptive behaviour disorders
